The Key City Bald Eagles' official flying season is late April through October. During these months, a training program is offered to new members. Advanced pilots can donate their time to teach new pilots how to fly. This is a great opportunity for the beginning R/C pilot. You will be taught how to control your aircraft in the air, proper takeoff and landing techniques, and good safety methods for flying with others. Most flying is done in the summer, but it is possible to fly during the winter months.
The club has set aside the third Saturday of every month as an unsanctioned flying event,(weather permitting). The get togethers usually start around 9:00AM, and spectators are welcome. This is a perfect opportunity for new pilots to ask advanced pilots questions or for help.
Our club meeting is the first Tuesday of the month at Happy Chef, Hiway 169, during inclimate weather.
The North Mankato City Council approved using city staff and materials to construct a landing strip, a wind sock, a sign and a portable toilet for owners of remote-control airplanes. The new facility will be a joint effort by the city, the North Mankato Electric Flyers and the South Central Service Cooperative, which is providing land and parking. The council agreed to construct a 150-foot paved X-style landing strip — both to promote a recreational opportunity and to draw visitors. "It will bring a number of people to the community because there are very few of these in the area," commented City Administrator Wendell Sande.
